Digital Literacy
Like Hazvineyi and I mentioned in our presentation, the way we learn, communicate and take in information today impacts the way we live and work, and is definitely different than a decade or two ago. The seven digital literacy skills that we studied are required to get around in the information world. Each of us has some of the skills intuitively, but some skills are still required in order for us to be more successful with the way we communicate in the digital world today. First, we need to understand what the seven skills are which we all explained well in our presentation, next, we need to recognize what area or skills we are weak in, lastly, we need to develop those skills. The need to learn the skills might sound overwhelming, but I am sure you all agree that there are aspects in each DL skill that are overlapping, one might compliment another. For e.g. Both Information and Socio-Emotional Literacy required one to be a critical thinker. To enhance our skills that we fall short on, the old adage “practice makes perfect” applies here. When we practice a skill, the skill gets strengthened. After using the digital literacy, we need to then evaluate if what we are doing works. E.g. If we open up an email where we do not know the sender and are hit with a virus, we will be much more reluctant or skeptical in opening up another email from an unknown sender.

ReplyDeleteHi Pam.
ReplyDeleteI agree. To safely and properly use the Digital Literacy, we need to improve our skills in this area every day because new technology grows so fast and without these abilities our life will me much more difficult. Today our lives are becoming more computerised because using new technology saves us so much time. ( e.g. using internet banking, digital cameras, self checking out in the stores and so on...). Through the internet I found my old classmate who was my best friend and we haven't communicated in 19 years.
Hi Pam and Anna
ReplyDeleteI was a victim of a virus recently and the lessons i have learnt have certainly made me a little more cautious than before. I am finding with using the wiki and this blog i am learning new skills that i would otherwise not have tried outside of this class. It is now as easy as tic tac toe to log on to both but when i first started Marc had to assist me in class just to get on to the blog. Practice sure makes perfect. It is always nice to reconnect with schoolmates, isn't it Anna. Especially as i relocated from everyone i find it difficult to stay in touch. But when i do it is a joy. A little piece of home right here in Canada.

ReplyDeleteGuess, where I found her? In Cancun,Mexico. So last year i went there and met her. We are both from small town in the northern part Russia and met in Cancun after 19 years.
Excellent stuff re: the community that's been created already!
